Creating a Lead Magnet Landing Page

This introductory lesson lays the foundation for the entire series by explaining what lead magnets are, why they're such a powerful marketing tool, and how they fit into a successful sales funnel. You'll get an overview of the concepts covered throughout the course and learn how providing value before asking for a sale can help turn cold prospects into loyal customers.

Most people who visit your website aren't ready to buy—and that's perfectly normal. In this lesson, you'll discover the Larger Market Formula and learn how to identify the four stages of buyer awareness. By understanding where your audience is in their journey, you'll be able to create lead magnets and marketing messages that meet potential customers where they are, building trust before asking them to make a purchase.

Not all lead magnets are created equal. In this lesson, you'll learn the five essential characteristics that every successful lead magnet should have: relevance, value, instant gratification, professional quality, and lead qualification. By applying these principles, you'll be able to create offers that attract the right audience, provide immediate value, and generate higher-quality leads for your business.

Creating a great lead magnet is only half the equation. In this final lesson, you'll learn how to present your offer with a landing page designed to maximize conversions. From writing compelling headlines and effective calls-to-action to improving mobile usability and page speed, you'll discover practical strategies that encourage more visitors to exchange their contact information and take the next step in your sales funnel.

Welcome to our video series on creating lead magnets that convert, where we'll guide you through creating a lead magnet that transforms cold leads into loyal customers within your sales funnel.

In this series we’re going to walk through what lead magnets are, how to make an effective lead magnet, and how to create an effective landing page for your lead magnet..

And throughout the series, we’re going to apply these principles within the context of something called the larger market formula, which we’ll explain in the next video.

These concepts have been instrumental in the growth of countless businesses, so if you’re ready to take your business to next level, stay tuned.

This video will focus on the Larger Market Formula and its critical role at every stage of your sales funnel, especially in crafting a lead magnet.

In the larger market formula, we categorize your audience into four segments within a pyramid structure. At the top, you have people in the buying stage, which accounts for 3% of your audience. Below that we have people in the “information gathering” stage, which accounts for 17% of your audience. In the third level, we have people in the “Problem Aware” stage, which accounts for 20%, and at the bottom we have people that are “Problem Unaware”, and they account for a whopping 60% of your audience.

To truly understand each stage, though, let's consider a specific product, a smart home thermostat, and how its customers can be categorized within the four stages of the Larger Market Formula:

Customers in the buying stage are ready to purchase a smart home thermostat. They may have experienced a failure with their current thermostat or have recently moved into a new home and are actively looking to upgrade their home automation system. These customers have done their research, know the benefits of a smart thermostat, and are just deciding on the brand or model to purchase.

Customers in the information gathering stage are aware that they could improve their home’s energy efficiency and are starting to look into smart thermostats as a solution. They may have heard about smart thermostats from friends or seen ads online and are now researching to understand how these devices work, their benefits, and the cost savings they might offer. They are comparing different brands, reading reviews, and watching demonstration videos to gather more information.

Problem Aware Stage:

Customers in the problem aware stage have recognized that their energy bills are high or that their current thermostat system is inefficient or outdated. However, they might not yet be aware of smart thermostats as a solution. They are aware of the problem but haven’t started actively looking for specific solutions like a smart home thermostat. They might be considering various ways to reduce energy costs or improve home automation without knowing the full range of options available.

And then lastly, people in the problem unaware stage are not aware that they have an issue that a smart home thermostat could solve. They might be content with their current heating and cooling setup and have no immediate complaints or concerns regarding their energy consumption. They are not actively seeking any solutions because they don’t think they have a problem.

For a company selling smart home thermostats, understanding these stages helps in tailoring marketing efforts for each segment. For example, for those in the buying mode, the focus can be on differentiating their product from competitors. For the information-gathering and problem-aware stages, educational content that highlights the benefits and cost savings of smart thermostats can be very effective. For those unaware of the problem, broader awareness campaigns that highlight the potential inefficiencies of traditional thermostats and the advantages of smart home technology could gradually move them up the pyramid towards considering a purchase.

Another way to think about this would be like dating. If you asked someone to marry you on the first date, or even the third date, what would their reaction be? More than likely, you haven’t built up enough trust in the relationship for them to make that decision. In essence, you have to know what stage they’re in before asking them to make a purchase, or “marry you”.

Now that we understand the importance of the buyer stages, in the next video we’re going to use this knowledge to help us create a lead magnet that targets your potential customer right where they are in this formula, so stay tuned.

In this video, we'll discuss the essential qualities that define an effective lead magnet, also known as a high-value content offer (HVCO). A lead magnet is essentially a free item or service provided to potential customers in exchange for their contact information. In order for a lead magnet to be effective, it needs to be relevant, value-driven, instantly gratifying, high quality, and lead qualifying.

So let’s talk through what each of those mean.

First, it needs to be relevant. Your lead magnet must resonate with the specific needs and interests of your target audience. Understanding who your ideal customer is, and what they need or want, is crucial. For instance, if you're a company selling running strollers, your target audience might be active, pregnant women. A relevant lead magnet for them could be a guide to staying fit during pregnancy or a stroller fitness workout plan. The goal is to connect your offer directly with the interests or needs of your potential customer, ensuring it’s something they find relevant and valuable.

Second, it needs to be value-driven. It must solve a real problem or fulfill a need for your audience. Continuing with the running stroller company example, while a postpartum fitness tracker is useful, a more immediately useful offer could be something like a third-trimester workout plan, because it directly addresses the current needs of your ideal customer, which you’ve already determined are active, pregnant women.

Third, it needs to be instantly gratifying: In today’s fast-paced world, people expect quick solutions. Your lead magnet should be accessible immediately after the potential customer provides their contact information. The quicker they can access the offer, the more satisfied they are likely to be. This immediate fulfillment not only meets the customer’s expectation for speed but also enhances their perception of your brand’s efficiency and reliability.

Fourth, it needs to be high Quality: The quality of your lead magnet reflects the quality of your brand. It’s often the first substantial interaction that a potential customer has with your company, so it's crucial to make a strong impression. If you promise a valuable resource, like a workout plan, it needs to be comprehensive, well-designed, and professionally presented. A high-quality lead magnet not only demonstrates your expertise but also builds trust with your audience.

And lastly, it needs to provide lead Qualification: An effective lead magnet also serves as a tool for qualifying leads, ensuring that the people who opt in are genuinely interested in your products or services, or have a high potential to be. By tailoring your lead magnet to attract your ideal customer profile, like the running enthusiast pregnant woman in our example, you ensure that your leads have a higher potential to convert into customers, saving your business time and resources. For the stroller company, for example, if the main leads they captured were 20 year old college students, then their lead magnet was not successful.

By crafting a lead magnet that embodies these five qualities, you create a powerful tool that attracts the right audience, offers them immediate value, and paves the way for a relationship built on trust and quality. In our next session, we'll explore how to create an effective landing page for your lead magnet, which will help maximize its reach, generate leads and drive revenue.

Welcome back! In this video we're going to focus on the crucial next steps after creating your lead magnet. We'll guide you through effectively posting and advertising it to attract and convert your target audience.

Before we do, though, let me tell you a quick case study about a book written by Naura Hayden, because it’s going to illustrate one of the most important aspects of creating an effective lead magnet.

In 1982, Naura published her book, Astro-Logical Love, and it didn’t do very well, It sold about 2,000 copies. However, a publisher in New York read the book and had an idea. He bought the rights to the book and republished it. But he didn’t change a single word in the book. The only thing he changed was the title and the cover. Instead of calling it Astro-Logical Love, he changed the title to How to Satisfy a Woman Every Time…and Have Her Beg for More. In the first 18 months the book sold over 2 million copies and became a New York Times bestseller.

The actual value of the book didn’t change. The difference was that his title made the value of the book clear.

This is an important illustration of how much of a difference the right presentation and words can make. You have to grab somebody’s attention and convince them that you have an immediate solution to their problem. Cause even though you’re calling your offer “FREE”, they are still paying for it with their name and email address.

So let’s walk through some examples of what your landing page for your lead magnet should include, because there are some clear rules that you need to follow to maximize your lead generation.

First, like we discussed, you need a clear and concise headline, and it needs to clearly state the value of your offer. For example instead of calling your lead magnet, Tips for Homebuyers, you could call it 5 Things To Avoid When Buying Your First Home that Could Save You $5,000. Your audience knows exactly what value you are offering with your resource.

Second, you need a compelling subheadline that explains what the customer can expect when they enter their information. An example would be “Simply enter your email address and our free PDF ebook will be emailed directly to you.”

Third, you need to tell them exactly where to input their information and make it visually clear. Keep the form simple and only ask for their name and email address. If you ask for too much, you’ll get less submissions and lower your conversion rate.

Fourth, you need to show them what they’ll be getting. If you’re providing an ebook, don’t use a stock image or something like that. If your lead magnet is an ebook, use a mockup of the book cover can be effective. Make sure the cover is visually appealing and reflects the topic of the ebook.

Fifth, you need to provide additional information in easy to digest bullet points. Don’t give away all the information, but make it clear what they can expect to learn or get from your offer.

Sixth, you need the page to look professional. Design does matter, and this is the first thing people notice when they get to your landing page. If the page looks unprofessional, they’re going to assume your offer isn’t valuable.

Seventh, you need to make sure your page is optimized for mobile traffic. Currently, over 60% of all web traffic is on mobile devices, so you have to make sure your page is optimized for that.

And last, you need your page load time to be as fast as possible. If someone has to wait too long for your page to load, they’re going to either leave before it does, or they won’t even trust your offer when they see it.

By adhering to these principles, you can significantly enhance the effectiveness of your lead magnet, which will create more leads and increase your conversion rates.

So, As we conclude our video series on creating a lead magnet that converts, remember that this is just the beginning of your journey in building an effective sales funnel. Once you've captured leads, the next step is to nurture them through the funnel, gradually elevating their awareness and interest until they become loyal customers, taking them all the way to the top of the pyramid.
